Cargo-cultists of the South Seas have nothing on these cultists south of the 49'th parallel.
No argument there, sk. I don't think the Cargo-cultists have dreams of empire and the rapture they await doesn't involve the death of all non-believers. (at least not that I know of!)
We have another Canadian to thank for casting shafts of light on these cultists.
You phrased that very well; Enright often covers compelling topics but while his reportage is intriguing, he stops short of enlightening.
I suppose it's a matter of perspective though, and many continue to be shocked by news at which the more jaded among us barely flinch.
Your misanthropy has become tiresome and miopic. Yawn.
Freecloud I wonder about your use of the word 'myopic' but wouldn't want to get too focused on a single word; so regarding misanthropy...if you've a secret stash of uplifting news, please do share, I'm sure many would be anxious to know of it.
jdcbyYes, I realized that I mis-spelled "mYopic", if that's what you mean, moments after posting it -as for what I mean, I don't need a secret stash of uplifiting news.....such is in the eyes of the beholder and it's all around - and beholder doensn't mean wearing blinders or being naive. You seem to spew an inordinate amount of anti-human bile without offering any concrete examples of positive action by yourself or others, except for anti-seal hunt, anti-Israel and pro-Caledonia protestors,,most of which I agree with, none of which is unique. Want some uplifting news??? Read "Virunga" by F. Mowat, the story of Dian Fossey, consisting mostly of her journals. The ending is tragic of course, but the story is uplifting....even moreso than her own book and the movie Gorrilas in the Mist. The human race is not even an eyeblink in the life of this planet let alone infinity, and it's course does have a tragic beauty. More uplifiting news...play some Mozart and go scuba diving at the same time. Read about a famous scientist named John Lilley who studied human-dolphin communication among other things. I'll be under my rock killing small animals and wiping out plantlife with the 98.8766 rest of the human race who lack your penetrating insight.
Hey - my final sentence in the last post was too bitter and sarcastic, just trying to make a point.....from your blog you seem to be a kind, insightful person who feels the "pain" of living things,,,,,but if I may be so bold as to say, especially as I don't know you - beware of becoming the thing you hate. Surround yourself with beautiful things and people if the nasty side of this race(especially the 'western' part of it)pisses you off so much - go hang out in a rainforest or something far away from concrete and neon for awhile. The human snowball is too far down the hill to be stopped, but the hill is much shorter than dinosaurs' hill was for example. All the best to you. (no bad spelling this time!)
:-)
Well, freecloud, I think you're well intended in some sense, but my you are so very presumptuous. Particularly after pointing out that you don't know me other than the little bits I post here on my blog. I am surrounded by things, creatures, places, and people whom I love and which bring me great pleasure. Farley Mowatt's writings are wonderful; I cannot possibly read of the Mountain Gorillas without considering how their fate has been doomed by humanity (no matter how wonderful they are in their natural state) and John Lilley did fine work which has unfortunately been co-opted by much more sinister ambitions.
You and I apparently share a love of nature; nice of you to point out a few of the details you've enjoyed.
Knowledge is power and it serves me to know more about the greater machinations which have turned our world onto it's putrid path, not least because humanity finds such industrious ways to destroy itself. I tend to post little tidbits of news that interests me, good, bad or otherwise.
I'm really not sure what your point is overall, except that you seem to have imagined some lack of joy in my personal life only because there's not a whole lot of it posted here on my blog; and seem to have some advice you wish to offer. I'd be lying if I said it was welcomed since I can't even recall you ever commenting here before, never mind the fact that you don't know me personally.
Sounds like maybe you're looking for a nature lover's adventure blog or the joy of knitting, for all I know.
All the best to you as well, I shall continue to post misanthropic or joyful as the news and the mood strike me. Should you feel the urge to comment here again, perhaps a topical one would be best since I don't blog in the search for advice from amateur anonymous psychoanalysts (no matter how well-meaning they might be).
(only for the sake of clarity: my reference to myopic in your first comment was not about the spelling, it was your selection of it.)
I've been reading your blog off and on over the past year or so, led to it by a search engine I believe....I just haven't had any desire to comment until yesterday. As for being an 'anonymous amateur phsychoanalyst' or whatever....well, I take a dim view of the profession overall and don't think I was engaging in it in any way shape or form. My comment(s) were indeed topical as they referred to your quote that 'human beings are sick' ,,a sentiment you've expressed repeatedly in your blog, so I did what I rarely do when I read blogs and made a brief comment. As for the anonymity......come now - if your real name is 'amelopsis' I'll be a sabre tooth tiger. And the "debate" itself - my most important point was more of a general one,,,that the human race is transitory and will be gone in a universal nano-second,,,people shouldn't get so worked up about it. Over the years I've met lots of engaged activist folks who ultimately became disillushioned haters, whereas their initial primary motive was quite the opposite. But you're correct I don't know you so I shall slink back into anonymous space. Oh,one last thing......it's a shame if you let John C. Lilly's work's misappropriation tarnish it for you. His books have all come back into print since his death six years ago and are among the most interesting things I've ever read. He was into a lot more than knitting and nature and so am I. Have a good infinity.
